Education for less fortunate children through volunteer schools in disaster areas.

Every child has right to have education, no exception. In theory, the state guarantees the right of children to education as outlined in the Constitution of 1945. However, in practice other facts prove that there are millions of children due to various barriers have not had access to education.

In general there are 3 (three) main barriers, economic barriers, culture and geography. Economic barriers are community income levels that they are not able to finance their children’s education. These conditions especially for orphans and those whose parents do not have a steady job. Cultural factors is a view to place education is not something that is important for children especially for women. There is a common view within the community that is no matter how high on level she will eventually return to the “kitchen”. While geography factor is a long distance from residential to schools as well as dwellings geography prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and landslides.

To overcome these obstacles, in 2012 the Diva Tunas Bangsa Foundation (Yayasan Diva Tunas Bangsa) opened Diva Tunas Bangsa Vocational High School. The opening of that institution has been helping rural children gain an education so they can be equal with other children and in turn forward their future will be brighter.

Students are moving donated tables and chairs to what we call “learning centre”.

The opening of the school is still facing problems faced by school administrator and the students. The school in one side, does not have sufficient school facilities needed for better teaching-leaning process: permanent class, furniture, and other supplies. We thanked friends from the Netherlands donated chairs and tables that enable students to study better.

In the students’ side  what they are facing is the daily cost and to buy school supplies. Their parents whose their earn can not finance it makes the situation worse, especially to the orphans.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATo ensure the school safety as it  is located is an area where earthquakes, prone, hurricanes and landslide easily to happen it is urgently needed to mitigate the bad impact of those natural disasters. In 2012 in the local area has occurred landslides and hurricanes resulted of  losing of property and lives.

Therefore, special efforts are needed so that the continuity of education and children’s safety could be guaranteed. Alternative is to do with foster parents and to seek training to mitigate the negative impact of natural disasters.

“No to Captive Dolphin Show” campaign : when music speaks.

School graduation is a best moment to raise awareness where students, teachers, parents, government officials, and public in general come. In the line with it, on 5 June 2013 I had a no to captive dolphin show campaign in Al Barokah Junior School. More and more people were aware of what really happens in the captivity. The truth behinds the show.

What made this campaig was special is that sticker “No to Captive Dolphin Show” was found on musical instruments and got attention from the people attending.

During the performance I had a chat with students, parents and others about how they could get involved to help the captives. Not to buy a ticket to show is the easiest way. The show will over when no one comes.
Thank you for your wonderful support.

Engaging youth as dolphin deffender

Not many people know what is happening in Taiji, Japan where dolphins are caught: some are be slaughtered for food and the rest are for captives in Marine Parks. As people are actively encouraged to visit Marine Parks and watch dolphin shows on the pretext that it is a form of education, this is misleading as it does not show the sad truth of their captivity facilitated by the drive hunts in Taiji.

There is nothing to be learned from watching captive dolphins performing tricks for dead fish, but it shows people (especially children) cruel behavior towards animals/mammals. Thus, it is necessary to raise awareness across our planet to oppose dolphin shows.
In the line with my goal trying to end those cruelty, I gave talk to hundred of students coming from ten schools (Bogor and Jakarta) on a two days workshop from May 31 to 1 June 2012 “Schools Friend of the Earth” in my village. During the talk I show two videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6hITFXcWQA.webloc , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhot7F_C2p0, and distributed stickers. I also had had further discussion on how captivity is so cruel and get their support to spread the message among their friends at schools and home. “Peace-building in Taiji and No to Captive Dolphin Show” campaign is continuing and will always be.
